It’s finally here — The One Room Challenge!!

The One Room Challenge™, currently in its seventeenth season, which happens every Spring and Fall season. Each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge, as Featured Designers, and transform a space. Every Wednesday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over six weekly posts. Now, bohofrisco isn’t quite known enough to be a featured designer, but lucky for us they allow Guest Participants!

In addition to following along, everyone with a blog or Instagram account, is welcome to join the fun as a Guest Participant by linking their own room transformations up during the six weeks. Each Thursday, the internet and social media are flooded with interior design inspiration, ideas, and encouragement.

According to their website, more than 3,800 rooms have been transformed through the One Room Challenge™. The event, and many of the spaces, have been recognized and featured.

I personally heard about this for the first time many years ago. I love the idea of focusing your energy on having a completed space. In my decision endeavors, as chaotic as my mind, I’ve tended to jump from room to room and small idea to another. I will obsess over getting just the right shower curtain, and then leave the the walls bears for months afterwards! Based on the success of the ORC, I have to assume I am not alone!

So which room to choose? Well, my husband and I have lived in this apartment in San Francisco for seven years. However, we only took over the lease and have been on our own for about 18 months. Over the year and a half since we were in this apartment alone, we have neglected our master bedroom the most. We rushed to get basics in here when we first moved in, a mattress, a frame, and dressers for clothing… Then, that was it. We didn’t do anything else with the room. As a result, it feels like the perfect opportunity to participate in the ORC and finally get it done with all of your encouragement and support!

Let’s start with how the room looked when we first moved in!

King size bed takes up almost all of the room, but is a non-negotiable from the Husband

(Please excuse the extreme yellow of this photograph! No natural light and I decided to take the picture at night time.) I am planning to keep the bed and frame. My husband is not willing to budge on the size of the bed, though I personally think a queen size mattress would fit a lot better! The frame isn’t bad… It’s never really been my style or offered much in the way of function, but there’s nothing wrong with it. I am planning to attempt to repaint the fabric to create a much more fun color without breaking the bank.

Two dressers, purchased online from Ikea last year. Still love them.
How our room has essentially stayed since we moved in!

From this angle you can see how truly small this room is! That means we have to get creative with making it feel fun, without being able to add any additional furniture. There’s lots of wall space to work with using the tall ceilings. I also am leaning towards keeping the gallery wall. I just love seeing our wedding pictures and think it looks great. However, it feels like that eliminates the idea of doing a gallery wall on any other walls. This leaves two giant blank walls and no ideas what to put on them. Some thoughts include maybe a wooden letter quote, a macrame wall hanging, or some other no traditional art. Maybe something will strike me in the next few weeks!!

Here is a sketch of the room’s dimensions just so you can get a sense of how much space we have in this room:

Okay and the moment you have been waiting for! Here’s a mood board of the project plan right now:

Mood Board & Design for Master Bedroom Makeover

This mood board was designed with putting some flare into the space again! We want to bring some color into this room which has remained really neutral since we moved in. I have considered doing a colorful wall, but the white feels like the freshest choice and will allow the colors to really shine. Keep in mind, living in a rental means I can only make aesthetic changes and the things we create we want to be able to change back or move with us! So, although this room won’t have any demolition, it will hopefully inspire you to feel like you can create a space you love within any restrictions!

Now that the design is up, and the room is ready for an overhaul let’s check out the things that I still need to do:

  • Order Supplies
    • Paint for the walls
    • Tools to paint if anything needs replacing (drop cloth, new roller, etc.)
    • Stencil? Sample Spoon flower Wallpaper? for side project
    • Fabric paint, Fabric medium, 2” brush for headboard makeover
  • Order products
    • Updated Textiles (Sheets, etc.)
    • Wall Hanging
    • Curtains
    • Curtain Rod
    • Rug [Revival]
    • Throw Pillows & Details

Whew, that sounds like a lot when I type it all out. Hopefully I can get it done in the seven weeks we have since it’s taken me 18 months to get around to looking at the room.

Be sure to follow along here to catch further updates on the space! And be sure to check out the fellow designers. You won’t believe some of the room transformations!! More details can be found on ORC Blog page (www.oneroomchallenge.com/orc-blog).
